Grand Magal of Touba — first Mouride pilgrimage
1928 · Touba
In 1928, a year after Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba was called back to God, his disciples organised in Touba the first Grand Magal to commemorate his departure into exile in Gabon in 1895. The word magal means in Wolof to pay tribute. Today, the Grand Magal gathers several million pilgrims from all over the world. It is one of the largest religious gatherings in Africa.
