Megaliths of Senegambia
~3rd century BC – 16th century · Kaolack
Between the 3rd century BC and the 16th century, a people raised circles of giant stones along the Gambia River to honour their dead. Over a thousand of them survive today. UNESCO inscribed them on the World Heritage list in 2006 — among the most remarkable testimonies of the ancient civilisations of West Africa.
