Sud FM — the first private radio

1994 · Dakar

On 1 July 1994, Sud FM, of the Sud Communication group, aired its first broadcast — the very first private radio station in Senegal's history. It broke the state's monopoly over the FM band. In a major innovation, press reviews were soon broadcast entirely in Wolof: for the first time, non-literate people could access the news of the papers directly.
