The independent press — Wal Fadjri and Sud
1984 – 1986 · Dakar
Facing the state daily Le Soleil, a free press emerged. In January 1984, Sidy Lamine Niass founded Wal Fadjri, a bold independent voice. In March 1986 came Sud Hebdo — the future Sud Quotidien — which laid the foundations of investigative journalism in Senegal. These titles opened an era of pluralism and public debate, giving Senegalese a different reading of the news.
