The SOCOCIM cement works — building Senegal

1948 · Rufisque

Founded in 1948 in Rufisque, SOCOCIM became the largest cement plant in West Africa. Its cement was used to build roads, schools, blocks and houses across the country. For decades the factory supported an entire town and supplied the raw material of Senegal's urban growth. From working-class neighbourhoods to major construction sites, the concrete of Rufisque shaped the everyday landscape of Senegalese life.
