The Almoravid Movement
~1040–1090 · Vallée du fleuve Sénégal
In the 11th century, Berber tribes of the western Sahara launched a powerful Islamic reform movement. These men, the Almoravids, set out from the Senegal River region and extended their influence northward to Morocco and southward. Around 1076, they contributed to the decline of the Ghana Empire and accelerated the spread of Islam in the kingdoms of the Senegal valley.
