Alboury Ndiaye — last Buurba of Djolof
~1890 · Linguère
Alboury Ndiaye bore the title of Buurba — supreme king — of Jolof, the old Wolof empire of central Senegal. Rather than accept French domination, he chose exile and continued to resist from other lands. He died in 1901, in battle, far from his country. His entire life was a refusal to surrender.
