The birth of the written press
1856 – 1970 · Saint-Louis
The history of the Senegalese press began in 1856 in Saint-Louis with Le Moniteur du Sénégal, the first official newspaper, under Governor Faidherbe. In 1933 came Paris-Dakar, which became the first daily newspaper in sub-Saharan Africa. Renamed Dakar-Matin at independence, it gave way on 20 May 1970 to the national daily Le Soleil. In the 1970s, independent and satirical newspapers finally emerged, opening the era of public debate.
