Ndatté Yalla Mbodj — resistance of the Waalo
1855 · Waalo
Ndatté Yalla Mbodj was the queen of Waalo, a region of northern Senegal. She refused to surrender her kingdom to France and firmly opposed every demand. Defeated militarily, she was sent into exile at Dagana in 1855. She never abandoned the cause of her people. She is honoured today as one of the great figures of Senegalese resistance.
