The Kingdom of Baol
Milieu du 16th century – 1894 · Baol
Baol is one of the kingdoms born from the breakup of the Jolof Empire in the mid-16th century; it became independent around 1549, like Cayor. Its founding dynasty is Wolof, with the family name Fall, of the same family as Cayor’s. Its ruler bears the title teigne, and its old capital was Lambaye. The two kingdoms were rivals: in the 18th century Cayor several times managed to make Baol its vassal. In 1871, after a treaty between the French and Cayor, Lat Dior annexed Baol and united the titles of damel and teigne. Baol gradually lost its autonomy: a treaty in 1859, then the extension of the French protectorate in 1883 through a treaty with the teigne Thiéyacine Fall. When Tanor Gogne Dieng, the last teigne, died on 3 July 1894 he was not replaced: Baol was split into western and eastern Baol. Mbacké and Touba, cradle of the Mouridiyya, lie in the former Baol.
