The Senegal River dams — Diama and Manantali

1986 – 1988 · Diama, Saint-Louis

In the 1980s, Senegal, Mauritania and Mali joined forces, through the OMVS, to harness the Senegal River. The Diama dam, completed in 1986 near Saint-Louis, blocked the inflow of seawater and made it possible to irrigate tens of thousands of hectares. The Manantali dam brought electricity to three countries. Drinking water for Dakar, crops in the valley, power in homes: these works changed the lives of millions.
