Senegambia Confederation and the crisis of 1989

1982–1989 · Dakar

On 1 February 1982, Senegal and Gambia created the Senegambia Confederation to strengthen their cooperation. Political difficulties led to its dissolution in 1989. That same year, a conflict between herders and farmers in the river valley sparked a crisis between Senegal and Mauritania: tens of thousands of people from both countries were expelled. These ordeals showed how precious peace between neighbours truly is.
