Transition — Abdou Diouf and Senghor at the Académie française
31 déc. 1980 / 1983 · Dakar
On 1 January 1981, President Senghor voluntarily handed power to his Prime Minister Abdou Diouf, as the Constitution provided — a rare gesture in Africa at the time. In 1983, Senghor became the first African elected to the Académie française. Abdou Diouf would govern Senegal until 2000.
