Mali Federation — a brief union
1959–1960 · Dakar
In January 1959, Senegal and French Sudan decided to unite to form the Mali Federation. The aim was to build together a strong state at independence. Deep disagreements over how to govern led to the federation's break-up in August 1960. Senegal then proclaimed its independence alone.
