Railway workers' strike on the Dakar-Niger line

1947–1948 · Dakar

Between 1947 and 1948, the African railway workers of the Dakar-Niger line went on strike for 160 days to win pay equal to that of their French colleagues. They held firm and won. The Senegalese writer Ousmane Sembène immortalised this struggle in his novel God's Bits of Wood — one of the great books of African literature.
