William Ponty School — the builders of Africa
1903–1950s · Gorée / Sébikotane
In 1903, the French opened a major school on Gorée Island — the William Ponty School, later moved to Sébikotane. It trained teachers, nurses and administrators for all of West Africa. Young people from Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire studied side by side. Many of them became the first leaders of their independent nations.
