Founding of Touba
1887 · Touba
In 1887, Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba chose a secluded place in Baol and gave it the name Touba — an Arabic word meaning beatitude. The city grew slowly around this holy site. Today, the Grand Magal of Touba gathers several million people from all over the world. It is one of the largest religious gatherings on the African continent.
