Berlin Conference — the partition of Africa

1884 · Saint-Louis

In November 1884, fourteen powers, including the United States, met in Berlin to set the rules for dividing Africa among themselves. Not a single African representative was present. The borders of Senegal and all its neighbours were drawn by foreigners on maps. The conference launched the most intense period of colonial occupation in African history.
