Founding of the Daara of Koki
~1730 · Koki, Louga
In October 1939, at Koki in the Louga region, the holy man Serigne Ahmadou Sakhir Lô founded a great daara — a Quranic school — on the spiritual recommendation of Mame Cheikh Mbaye of Louga. Driven by a vision of solidarity and free Islamic teaching, the daara welcomes thousands of talibés of all ages who learn the Quran and the Islamic sciences at no cost. Koki is today one of the most respected centres of Islamic learning in Senegal.
