The Marabout War

1673–1677 · Vallée du fleuve Sénégal

In 1673, a scholar named Nasir al-Din launched from Mauritania an Islamic reform movement that spread into Senegal, calling on Muslim scholars to overthrow the kings who took part in selling captives to Europeans. Known as the War of the Marabouts, it failed in 1677 — but sowed seeds that would germinate the following century.
